Graphcore strengthens India’s AI ambitions
British AI chipmaker Graphcore has announced a major investment plan of £1 billion in India over the next decade. The company will establish an AI engineering hub in Bengaluru, aiming to make India a global centre for semiconductor and AI design excellence. This move marks a significant step in India’s growing role in the global AI ecosystem.
Expanding engineering excellence
Owned by Japan’s SoftBank, Graphcore plans to create 500 new semiconductor jobs, with an immediate target of hiring around 100 engineers in areas like silicon logic design, verification, and characterisation. Since its acquisition by SoftBank, Graphcore has been integrated into a broader AI infrastructure strategy that includes the $500 billion Stargate initiative with OpenAI and Oracle. The Indian centre will design and develop semiconductor products that can power AI systems for industries like healthcare, environmental science, and drug discovery.
Building India’s semiconductor capabilities
The firm clarified that India will initially focus on design and development, not chip fabrication, since advanced manufacturing nodes (like 3nm and 2nm) are still concentrated in Taiwan. However, he acknowledged India’s growing engineering expertise as a valuable foundation for future semiconductor ambitions.
A boost for India’s AI future
Graphcore’s Bengaluru centre symbolizes confidence in India’s technical talent and its strategic place in global AI supply chains. It aligns with India’s vision to become a major AI innovation hub, strengthening partnerships across academia, research, and industry.
