India strengthens its global AI footprint
India now accounts for 16% of the world’s AI talent, according to the India Skills Report 2026, jointly released by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), CII, AICTE, and AIU. With a projected 1.25 million AI professionals by 2027, the country is fast emerging as a preferred hub for skilled digital workers.
Employability and skill-driven growth
India’s employability rate has improved to 56.35% in 2025 from 54.81% last year, reflecting a growing emphasis on AI adoption, digital fluency, and skilling initiatives. The report highlights a stronger gender inclusion trend and higher participation from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, signalling a broader democratization of opportunity.
Expanding gig and tech workforce
The gig and freelance workforce is projected to reach 23.5 million by 2030, driven by a 38% annual rise in project-based hiring. While 72% of roles will remain permanent, the growth of gig and hybrid work indicates a dynamic shift toward flexibility and skill-based hiring in IT, BFSI, and renewable sectors.
Education and AI integration
Educational programs like AICTE’s Project PRACTICE and new AI–climate initiatives are strengthening employability. The focus on modular, project-based learning and AI-integrated certifications is bridging the gap between academia and industry needs, promoting lifelong learning and adaptability.
The road ahead
As India continues this upward trajectory, its success will hinge on balancing technical innovation with inclusive skill development. The nation’s growing AI expertise signals a powerful transformation in the global digital economy.
Summary
India’s share in global AI talent has reached 16%, with employability and skill-based growth improving steadily. Educational reforms, hybrid learning, and AI adoption are driving workforce transformation and positioning India as a global AI powerhouse.
