"AI is good at describing the world as it is today with all of its biases, but it does not know how the world should be." - Joanne Chen, Partner, Foundation Capital.
'Safe and Trusted AI' Conclave
At this Conclave held in Chennai, hosted by IIT Madras' centre for responsible AI (CeRAI), the Tamil Nadu Industries Minister stated that good and well-thought-out policy is paramount for developing AI and regulations should serve as enablers for innovation. The need for continuous policy tweaks to address emerging challenges was explained.
Geopolitical flux
Sovereign AI is central to addressing current geopolitical issues. The conclave aims to ensure the development and deployment of AI technologies that are safe, responsible, and globally inclusive. Experts stressed that consultations and use cases must differ between states, hence all states must be involved in the process. The Safe and Trusted AI Working Group will play a crucial role in determining whether AI can be implemented from the safety angle. This group is a multinational coalition led by India.
Bias-free inclusion
Experts from the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (WSAI), noted that AI must empower and not exclude people. Experts from MeitY added that the biggest concern is ensuring AI is free of bias and is inclusive, not excluding any strata of society. This ethical deliberation is key to global governance discussions.
India’s path
The event serves as a preparatory activity for the India AI Impact Summit 2026. India’s “human compute” is considered highly valuable and a crucial leverage point. This human resource should be used to achieve global leadership in AI innovation, creating a path for technological progress aligned with national values and global safety.
Summary
A conclave on 'Safe and Trusted AI' in Chennai underscored that sovereign AI and continuous policy are vital amid geopolitical shifts. Key leaders stressed that future AI must be inclusive, bias-free, and empower all people. The event, preparatory to the 2026 India AI Impact Summit, emphasized leveraging India's "human compute" for global AI leadership.
Food for thought
If sovereign AI is essential for national security and strategic interests, how can India lead a multinational working group aimed at globally inclusive AI deployment?
AI concept to learn: Sovereign AI
Sovereign AI refers to a nation's ability to build, control, and regulate its own artificial intelligence systems using domestic infrastructure, data, and talent. It ensures that critical national security, ethical values, and economic competitiveness are prioritized over dependence on foreign technology or infrastructure. This concept is becoming crucial in an age where geopolitical stability is increasingly linked to technological self-reliance and control over strategic data.
