India leads downloads
India became a generative AI powerhouse in 2025, claiming 16 per cent of global downloads. Users from India downloaded 0.6 billion apps, which is a sharp rise from 10 per cent in 2023. This demonstrates a massive local appetite for new digital tools. Clearly, India is a massive market for the West, and even for China.
Exceptional growth
Local downloads grew by 204 per cent. Users spent 6 billion hours on these apps, accounting for over 12 per cent of global time. With 178 billion sessions, India has deeply integrated AI into its daily digital routines.
High usage, low revenue
While usage is high, India accounts for just under 1 per cent of global revenue. While global markets hit $ 5 billion, India contributed just $ 48 million. Most users prefer free versions over paid subscriptions. This is a dark shadow over the business prospects of Western firms.
Top apps dominate
ChatGPT and Google Gemini are the top apps in India. Globally, ChatGPT and Deepseek control half the market. Big tech dominance makes it difficult for smaller developers to find a significant foothold in the current market.
Market concentration
The landscape is narrowing as major publishers saw their share rise to 30 per cent. Many older competitors are being pushed out, leaving few downloads for others. The market is consolidating around giants.
Summary
India led global generative AI app downloads in 2025 with a 16 per cent share. While engagement is record-breaking, the region generates minimal revenue. This highlights a gap between massive user adoption and financial monetization.Food for thought
Will India eventually transition from being a consumer of free AI tools to a source of global AI revenue?
AI concept to learn: Generative AI Apps - US versus China
Generative AI apps in the US and China reflect sharply different ecosystems. American apps emphasise creativity, productivity, and open ended exploration, driven by startups and big tech platforms competing globally. Chinese generative AI apps prioritise utility, control, and integration with everyday services like payments, e commerce, and governance. Regulation shapes both paths. The US leans on market competition and self regulation, while China embeds AI tightly within state objectives, platform supervision, and social stability goals.
