Boosting the budget

The Indian government is weighing a major expansion of the Digital Agriculture Mission with plans to significantly increase financial support. Reports indicate the budget for the FY27 to FY30 period could rise to ₹7,500 crore. This represents a substantial 166% increase over the initial allocation of ₹2,817 crore. The move signals a strong commitment to integrating technology into the agricultural sector.

Tackling crop losses

Agriculture is a critical sector that supports nearly half of the country's workforce and contributes about 18% to the GDP. However, it faces serious challenges such as pests which cause crop losses worth approximately ₹2 trillion annually. Policymakers are keen to reduce these losses and raise farm productivity by deploying modern digital solutions rather than relying on traditional methods.

Deploying smart tech

The expanded mission aims to deploy artificial intelligence to improve real time decision making across Indian farms. This includes better management of weather data, soil health, irrigation, and pest control. The goal is to shift from static information and simple SMS advisories to advanced AI driven systems that provide early warnings and accurate yield forecasting.

Building digital infrastructure

A central part of this initiative is the creation of a digital public infrastructure for agriculture known as Agri-Stack. This includes the Krishi Decision Support System and comprehensive soil fertility maps. These efforts aim to unify previously fragmented schemes like Soil Health Cards into a robust ecosystem that supports data platforms and indigenous models.

Aligning national goals

This agricultural push complements the broader IndiaAI Mission which has a budget of over ₹10,372 crore. By supporting computing infrastructure and data platforms, the government seeks to foster an AI ecosystem that benefits vital sectors. This strategic alignment ensures that digital advancements translate into tangible benefits for farmers and the national economy.

Summary

The government plans to increase the Digital Agriculture Mission budget to ₹7,500 crore to integrate AI into farming. This initiative targets reducing massive crop losses and improving productivity through real time data on weather and soil. By building a unified digital infrastructure, the mission aims to modernize agriculture for millions of workers.

Food for thought

If small scale farmers lack the digital literacy to interpret AI driven data, will this massive technological investment widen the inequality gap in rural India?

AI concept to learn: Decision support systems

A decision support system is a computer program that analyzes large amounts of complex data to help humans make better choices. It looks at historical facts and current patterns to suggest the best possible actions for solving specific problems.
