Bridging infrastructure gap

A government paper states AI must be broad and inclusive. Currently, resources are concentrated in few firms. India needs a framework to lower barriers and ensure equitable participation beyond major hubs.

Scaling data centres

India has 20 percent of world data but only 3 percent of capacity. Demand is rising with AI workloads. Projections show current capacity of 960 MW reaching 9.2 GW by 2030.

Regional hubs

Mumbai and Navi Mumbai lead in data centre capacity. Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad also hold significant shares. The goal is to make resources available so more actors can build AI responsibly.

Sovereign compute

The IndiaAI Mission is building a secure GPU cluster with 3,000 units. This is supported by the India Semiconductor Mission with an investment of 76,000 crore. These funds have facilitated ten advanced chip making projects.

Lowering barriers

Democratising access requires reducing costs. This allows researchers to use infrastructure without owning it. The framework must protect privacy and sustain trust when using sensitive datasets.

Summary

The Government of India aims to democratise AI by expanding compute resources across the nation. Through the IndiaAI Mission and semiconductor investments, the country seeks to provide affordable access for startups, ensuring technology benefits reach beyond large corporations and major cities.

Food for thought

Can India achieve true technological sovereignty if its digital growth remains heavily dependent on global hardware supply chains?

AI concept to learn: GPU Cluster

A GPU cluster is a group of many high powered graphics processing units working together. These clusters provide the massive computing power needed to train complex AI models quickly. By sharing the workload, they process vast amounts of data efficiently.
