A robust governance structure anchored in IndiaAI standards is central to this CII vision. Proposals include an AI Safety and Standards Authority under MeitY and an AI Incident Registry interoperable with CERT-In. These measures aim to improve risk assessment and ensure independent audits, particularly for high-risk AI systems. Addressing gaps in regulation will help India build trust and scale AI adoption more confidently.
Compute and data access issues
High compute costs and limited access to quality datasets still slow India’s AI development. A National AI Compute Grid, created through public private partnerships, can address this by offering incentives for data centres and supporting anonymisation practices. Improving these foundations will broaden access for startups, researchers, and enterprises.
Accelerating digital infrastructure and innovation
Strengthening digital public infrastructure such as Aadhaar, UPI, healthcare systems, and education platforms can deepen India’s AI-driven transformation. Investments in logistics, digital learning systems, and regulatory upgrades will promote efficiency and service equity. At the innovation level, targeted support through a Patent Commercialisation Fund can help translate India’s significant research potential into market solutions. And a National AI Skilling Mission can certify competencies in responsible AI and risk governance while Centres of Excellence expand opportunities in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
