Misusing AI images for petty refunds

Strangely, food businesses in India are now reporting a new kind of fraud: customers using AI generated images to claim refunds for supposedly damaged items. The brunt is being faced by food retailers like bakeries the most. Aggregators report cases where pictures of damaged food was used to take refunds, while it was found to be fakery all the way! The sophistication of recent AI image models has made fraud detection tough, and hence a corporate priority.

The first reported case?

Newspapers reported that a company Dessert Therapy in Mumbai found that a customer’s photo of a melted cake was almost entirely AI generated! Other restaurants too reported similar frauds, including insect images inside food (later found fake). The way out for now is for firms to use AI detection tools on such pictures. 

Changing tactics

This new scam has prompted food aggregators to implement new safeguards and early detection models to catch misuse. AI and machine learning models that generate these images can also be used to spot behaviour patterns to flag refund activity that is clearly suspicious. There will always be actual damage, and that needs to be handled with care. The food business depends on trust, and AI can harm that fabric hugely in the short-run. Technology has helped speed up operations, but the misuse of generative tools is putting a question mark on long-held assumption.

Fraud in other segments

In parallel, various ecommerce platforms have discovered some customers altering product images to claim damage or poor quality. Since generative AI is now accessible to any Indian who wants it, the challenge is to prepare for a future of zero-trust system checking, i.e. treating every image as potentially problematic and putting it through a check always.
