“AI will not replace people, but people who use AI will replace those who do not.” - Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft
Can't make frontier models? No problem
In the midst of a massive AI upheaval, India faces an important transition it must navigate. Clearly, millions of IT and BPO jobs are now potentially at risk. As a nation, what should be the best way out? First thought is to invest in building India's own frontier models, and domestic AI expertise. But that bus may have left already. Also, the nature of India’s workforce pyramid, very limited research output and shortage of advanced STEM talent make it difficult to compete directly with nations already leading AI innovation, like the US and China. (STEM - Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics)
Let's build those huge AI labs
If the instinct was to create foundational AI models now, then the need for immense capital, deep research culture and strong infrastructure puts paid to those hopes. India’s current capabilities do not match the scale required for competing with the United States or China. Even with higher reskilling efforts, only a fraction of the existing workforce will fit upstream AI research roles.
Why not focus on 'downstream innovation'
Look at the past 100 years. Every major technological shift created more opportunities downstream than at the point of disruption (where the tech changed). The arrival of the automobile in the US did not just reinvent mobility, it eventually gave rise to ride hailing, logistics and digital payments. Can we not think on the same lines for AI, for India? Million may now get new opportunities in content creation, software development, media production and countless emerging industries not even envisaged today.
A good step for India would be
India’s opportunity may be found in leveraging AI tools to generate new work. Smart entrepreneurs can now build products, services and creative outputs at a fraction of older costs. Instead of chasing the creation of large AI models, India can generate far greater value by helping its people adopt AI meaningfully. Empowering young innovators to use AI in novel ways can create industries not yet imaginable and shape the country’s technological future.
Summary
For a large nation like India, the AI opportunity does not lie in building massive AI models but in enabling widespread, creative use of existing tools. Downstream innovation can unlock new industries, generate jobs and offer India its best chance to lead in an AI driven future.
Food for thought
What new industries could emerge in India if every young entrepreneur learned to use AI deeply and creatively?
AI concept to learn: Downstream AI innovation
This refers to the valuable opportunities that emerge not from building AI models but from applying them in real products and services. It focuses on how AI tools enable new businesses, creative work and problem solving. It is where most economic value of AI is ultimately generated.
