Zoho's Deluge gets an AI layer

Reimagining low-code with intelligence

Zoho is embarking on a transformative move: integrating an AI layer into its scripting language Deluge. Originally designed in 2005 by Sridhar Vembu, Deluge (Data Enriched Language for the Universal Grid Environment) has been Zoho’s backbone for customization across its services. Now Zoho plans to open source Deluge, bringing its capabilities to a broader community.

Natural language meets coding

With AI augmentation, users will soon generate Deluge code through plain language prompts instead of writing manual scripts. As Hyther Nizam, VP of Products at Zoho, put it, this change helps “knock off any proprietary elements” and makes the platform more accessible. The vision is to let domain experts, not just developers, build applications faster.

Making proprietary open source

Deluge has run more than 25 billion executions annually within Zoho’s ecosystem. Zoho now intends to open it up to the world, inviting the developer community to shape its evolution. The open-source path may spur innovation, broader adoption, and integration beyond Zoho’s ecosystem.

Educating for the future

To catalyze this shift, Zoho is partnering with educational institutions to integrate Deluge into curricula and skill-development programs. The goal is to cultivate a new generation of developers comfortable with AI-assisted low-code development.

Boosting productivity

Zoho estimates that the AI layer could boost productivity by up to 100× in building and rolling out complex applications. This marriage of natural language interfaces and low-code scripting reflects Zoho’s ambition to retain control of its technology stack while widening access.

Summary

Zoho is adding an AI layer to its Deluge scripting language and plans to make it open source. Natural language prompts will replace manual scripting, boosting accessibility and productivity. Educational partnerships aim to grow a future-ready low-code ecosystem.

Food for thought

If tools let anyone code with language, what will happen to the role of traditional software engineers?

AI concept to learn: Natural language coding

Natural language coding enables users to express their intent in everyday language and have AI translate it into executable code. It lowers the barrier to programming and makes automation accessible to non-developers.
