Walmart takes a measured route
Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is not rushing to roll out its generative AI (GenAI) assistant, Sparky, in India. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Vinod Bidarkoppa, confirmed that while the technology is operational in the US, there is no fixed timeline for its integration into Flipkart or other international arms.
Testing the AI waters in the US
Sparky was launched in June to enhance Walmart’s customer experience through AI-powered shopping features like intelligent search, product descriptions, reviews, and comparisons. Currently, these capabilities remain exclusive to US users while the company studies customer interactions and refines the technology.
Strategic patience for global rollout
According to Bidarkoppa, Walmart’s strategy is to ensure that every market benefits from its GenAI platform once the foundational technology stabilizes. The aim is not rapid expansion but consistent quality across regions, ensuring that the same AI philosophy drives customer engagement globally.
Preparing for seamless integration
Walmart’s technology arm, Global Tech, hosted Converge 2025 in India, where executives discussed integrating GenAI across systems. The focus remains on platform readiness before deploying AI agents internationally, to maintain secure, efficient, and contextualized customer interactions.
The way forward
For Walmart, the key lies in scaling wisely. The company plans to synchronize its multiple AI agents, including Sparky and Marty, into a cohesive system that provides uniform service quality before introducing them to markets like India.
