"AI has the potential to help with some of the world's most challenging problems, from discovering new scientific breakthroughs to helping us navigate the complexities of the real world." - Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind

Scaling solutions

Google is actively leveraging India's diverse landscape to build AI tools that serve global needs. Manish Gupta from Google DeepMind highlighted that solutions for diabetic retinopathy and agricultural models originally developed in India are now reaching Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. This shift marks a transition from the country being seen merely as a back office to becoming a source of crucial innovation for the developing world.

Solving the language puzzle

A major hurdle for technology adoption is the language barrier. To bridge this gap, the tech giant has embedded 29 Indic languages and dialects into Gemini. Initiatives like Project Vaani and the new Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay aim to capture speech data from over 143 districts. This includes collecting data for languages that previously had zero digital corpus available for researchers.

Transforming vital sectors

The impact of these technologies is most visible in critical sectors like farming and health. New tools help farmers with soil analysis and crop prediction using local tongues through the Garuda model. In healthcare, Google is backing Wadhwani AI to pilot HealthVaani. These efforts ensure that complex AI models can interpret region specific contexts to function properly at the last mile.

Fueling the startup ecosystem

Financial support is ramping up to sustain this momentum. Google announced an 8 million dollar fund for government AI centers of excellence. Additionally, they are providing grants to startups like Gnani.AI and CoRover.AI that use Gemma models to build voice based services. This capital aims to create a robust infrastructure for future development and support the broader implementation of open data platforms.

Overcoming the investment lag

Despite these successes, challenges remain in domestic investment habits. Gupta noted that Indian industry spends a very small percentage of revenue on research and development compared to global standards. For India to truly lead rather than just implement, the private sector must increase its R&D footprint and move beyond service delivery to drive genuine deep tech research.

Summary

Google is utilizing India as a primary testing ground for AI in healthcare, agriculture, and linguistics, subsequently exporting these innovations globally. While funding for startups and research hubs is increasing to support local languages, experts warn that Indian industries must significantly boost their own R&D spending to stay competitive.

Food for thought

If Indian industries continue to underinvest in deep tech research, will the country remain a permanent testbed for foreign tech giants rather than becoming an owner of intellectual property?

AI concept to learn: Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is a leading AI research lab known for advancing artificial intelligence through deep learning, reinforcement learning, and neuroscience-inspired approaches. It gained global recognition with AlphaGo, which defeated world champions in Go, and later breakthroughs like AlphaFold, revolutionizing protein structure prediction. Now part of Google, DeepMind focuses on building general-purpose, responsible AI systems that can accelerate scientific discovery while emphasizing safety, ethics, and long-term societal benefit..
