A new Capgemini report on diversity and inclusion reveals that women remain underrepresented in leadership, even as organizations recognize their impact. While 77% of leaders believe women are as effective as men, gender gaps persist in pay, confidence, and opportunities for advancement.

The invisible bias of AI readiness

The rather surprising and worrisome subtler issue is that AI and automation are reinforcing gender divides. Half of male respondents see AI-related skills as future leadership tools, yet fewer women identify with these “masculine-coded” capabilities like data analysis and automation. This perception is quietly influencing who gets considered for senior roles.

Algorithms that exclude

History shows that bias can be embedded in AI itself. Amazon’s AI-based hiring tool once rejected women’s resumes because it was trained on male-dominated data. Although newer systems attempt to fix this, structural bias often remains coded in hiring algorithms, shaping who advances and who gets left behind.

The uneven impact of automation

UN and ILO studies indicate that women are more vulnerable to job displacement from automation, particularly in education, healthcare, and clerical roles. Nearly 28% of women’s jobs face automation risk, compared to 21% for men, a reflection of occupational segregation and systemic design bias.

Ensuring gender equity in the AI era demands more than diversity pledges. It requires rethinking education, policy, and technology design so that AI becomes a bridge, not a barrier, to inclusion. Otherwise, what should be a revolution of intelligence risks becoming a reinforcement of inequality.
